Celebrate the Small Things

Many thanks to Viklit and her awesome team of celebrators!

This week, I'm celebrating:

1. Two projects 99% complete and in use. My books of notes and assignments, although not as polished as I would like them to be, are done and are in use for two of my co-op classes this year.

In response, one young man said, "You wrote this! You wrote all of this, this summer . . . for fun?!"  Then, he turned bright red, as if he realized he had insulted my idea of "fun."
(The reality is that I have some serious control freak issues in the area of teen writing curriculum . . . either that, or incredible arrogance.)

2. All the awesome votes I received for Champion in Flight for the categories of "Best Kickbutt Main Character" and "Most Evil Villain" at Indie Recon Live! Voting is closed, but I feel seriously loved. Thanks!!!

3. I jumped off a cliff jump-started a project I've had in the works since early spring - an experimental micro-fiction serial entitled Ashes Burn. The first season Ashes Burn: Away is pre-loaded and will start "airing" on October 6th, with three "episodes" a week. (It's super experimental and super short so it's super scary, but I really want to get it out there anyway.)

4. How I Found the Write Path is out and is FREE in e-book format everywhere!!! The amazing Carrie Butler put this project together with some help from PK Hrezo. It's a huge honor to be on the list of sixty authors in this book.

Here’s the lowdown on this project: To celebrate Carrie's third blogoversary, she decided to pay it forward by inviting the writing/blogging community to help those just starting on their publishing journey. Why? Because it’s one of the most crucial periods in a writer’s life—full of nerves and hope we refuse to acknowledge. We’ve all been there.

That’s why over sixty of us have written letters to our past selves, candidly sharing things we don’t always discuss in public. The hope is that those of you who haven’t published will learn from our experiences. And those of you who have published? Well, you just might realize you’re not alone.

Have you picked up your free copy of How I Found the Write Path? Ever had anyone be surprised by your writing habits/idea of fun? Ever heard of micro-fiction? And, what are you celebrating this week?

And for those who think I have a cheerleader life and a naturally sunny disposition, please note that I spent Wednesday this week feeling super grumpy, in pain, and finally, I went to bed with a book and some ibuprofen (and I don't like taking any meds unless they're absolutely necessary) and I made my family fend for themselves for dinner. We all have days like that.
I'm thankful for the stuff we get to celebrate and for Viklit who reminds us to celebrate!

Book Signing Ups and Downs

I did a book signing last month!!! It was scary, awesome, exciting, exhausting, tough, and taught me a few lessons on preparedness.

What scared me: I forgot to rehearse my answer to "What is your book about?" The first person to ask me that question received a blank stare and a hasty half-answer. Thankfully, she asked lots of questions after that.

The awesome, exciting part: Friends and family came. One of my students from my homeschool co-operative came with his mom, sister, baby brother, and grandma. Strangers I never met before came and bought my book. A pre-teen girl asked her mom to get both my books for her brother and then told me she planned to read them too.  It wasn't a big crowd, but it was good. :)

The exhausting part: I wasn't feeling well, but since the bookstore owner and I had both advertised with flyers, posts, and with the local newspaper, I went. It was a struggle to maintain a happy, friendly "ok" presence when I really wanted to go back home and sleep. The bookstore owner provided a nice chair.

The tough part: A couple came into the bookstore expressly to meet the "local author" as advertised by the big sign outside the store on the sidewalk. They didn't like fantasy. They didn't understand why I would write fantasy. I struggled to answer the "why," and the bookstore owner leapt to my defense.

An interesting question that I could have answered if I wasn't so tongue-tied: A representative from the local newspaper came and asked me just one simple question, and I was so nervous I blanked it completely. The question: "What books have you read on writing?" My answer . . . "Um." Sad, but true. Thankfully, as a writer of novels himself, he jumped in with his favorite writing books and we had a conversation.

Afterwards, I took the time to start compiling the list of books I've written. Some of them can be found on my page Books on Writing.

The lesson I took away from the whole experience: I couldn't have foreseen that I would get ill, but I could be more prepared. I've written out the questions I was asked and I've written up answers. I'm going to rehearse.

And, the local bookstore owner is a gem - she offered to have me any time for another signing. :)

Have you ever had a book signing? If so, what was it like? If not, what do you dream it will be like? Do you find it easy or hard to talk about your writing?

And, have you picked up a copy of Champion in Flight yet?

Celebrate the Small (and the big) Things!

This has been a week of drama for me - exciting, fireworks drama, and taking pics of a CT scan machine while feverish kind of drama.

So, in order of events: I'm celebrating:

1. Champion in Flight - the book release!!! Thanks to everyone who has helped/is helping make this awesome!!! Thank you for the tweets, posts, google+, facebook updates, etc. Thank you for the e-mails, and the comments! You rock!

2. My daughters' upcoming roles in an indie film!!! Filming takes place in August, the film is being released in October at a local red carpet event, and then it will be released as a series on the web.

     Annabelle Veil, The Curator
 Kitty Temper, The Waitress

Ghost Noir is a film, comic and web series set in the gritty paranormal world of Detective Camille Delatore. A world without adults. A world with secrets. Ghost Noir on Facebook.

3. Blog Blitz by the Blitz Team and DL - Wow!!! Totally an awesome surprise!!!

4. IWSG and all the awesome, super supportive comments.

(Somehow I'll get around to commenting back - that was the day I started to have pain and problems as well as a crazy busy family schedule)

5. Great and easy access to medical care just 2 miles from my house.

6. Good news: antibiotics, lots of fluids, rest, and an upcoming visit with another specialist are all that I need to get well - at least so far. For those who knew via my feverish facebook posts and the CT scan machine picture, thank you for your prayers. They were felt. (BTW: fever + boredom + phone = TMI danger zone)

7. Home is a good place to rest. At least for a day, and then I get to watch my youngest race in her kayak for two days in a row in Seattle. If you live near there, come to Green Lake to watch the races. I'll be doing my best to hydrate and sit down.

So, what are you celebrating this week? Did you manage a week without drama? Did you survive a week with drama? Have any highs or lows? Things to dance for or pray for?

Ok, I pulled an terrible tech fail on the missing linky list, but you can still participate. (BTW, if the linky list shows, that's good too) Just answer the following questions in 100 words or less: What's your favorite way to fly and why? Griffin? Dragon? E.T. with a bicycle? Millennium Falcon? The Enterprise? Death Star? Space Shuttle? Giant Eagle? Cessna?
My entry: In real life, I choose the ercoupe: a two-seater plane ideally flown with my dad. In the fantasy realm, I would love to fly with a griffin. The why for both: the sensation of being in the air, feeling the currents, seeing the world in a patchwork quilt of colors under a bright blue sky. :)

Are you ready to take flight? Willing to help spread the word?

Many thanks for all your encouragement!!!

Champion in the Darkness will be free for three days this week for kindle, starting today.

This is the last time in 2014 that Champion in the Darkness will be free.

After this, I'm going to take it off Kindle Select and put it back up at other vendors like Smashwords and Nook.

Why now?

Next week, Champion in Flight will officially be released! I'm hoping that a few readers will pick up Champion in the Darkness, and look for the next book right away.

Champion in Flight is completely formatted and available for pre-sale orders at Smashwords.

Release date: June 2nd!!!

Until then, the first book in The Champion Trilogy, Champion in the Darkness is free from May 27th through May 31st!

Book 1: Champion in the Darkness
Clara’s ready to become a master swordswoman. When she goes to meet with longtime mentor Dantor, Clara is told she's destined to become the Champion, a fabled hero who arises in a time of need. Confused by this claim, Clara isn't sure she's ready to be a Champion.
Whether Clara is ready or not, the evil Kalidess has wormed her way into Septily's court.
Clara is aided by another mentor, Stelia, whose knowledge of their enemy is both a bane and a blessing. As evil threatens their land, Clara and Stelia must find the strength to overcome the darkness.

Champion in Flight Cover Reveal!!! and Celebrate the Small Things!!!

Here it is!!! The cover for Champion in Flight!!! My cover artist (also my niece) and I went through a learning curve on the cover for Champion in the Darkness, and we learned that we both like simple, colorful covers that draw the eye towards the title. So, it's simple and it's colorful, and the broken sword tip draws the eye towards the title.

What do you think of the cover and what kinds of covers do you like? Colorful, muted, detailed, simple? What kinds of covers do you think work best?

Champion in Flight is coming out on June 2nd for e-book (and paperback will come either then or after)! And I'll be hosting Flight Fest to celebrate. The rules of Flight Fest: 1. Post during the week of June 2nd. 2. Answer the following questions: What is your favorite why to fly and why? Millennium Falcon? Griffin? Dragon? 3. Visit Flight Fest participants.

Now, onto Celebrate the Small Things!

I haven't celebrated in a whole month . . . and it feels like too long. I'm not sure where to start.
1. In April, my youngest took 3rd at Paddler's Cup for her age group in kayaking. My oldest got her driver's permit (for learners), we skied at Whistler, B.C. and one of our niece's had a beautiful wedding. (and I survived A to Z) (Oh, and my youngest had a few quotes about kayaking in the local newspaper - link here)
2. Cover Reveal!
3. I made extremely slow, but determined progress on Champion in Flight, and I'm just in the last stages of copy-editing and formatting now. June 2nd is release day!!!
4. My house is cleaner than it has been in a month because we had our church cell/small group over on Wednesday for a mini-worship and Bible study.
5. Super Encouraging Friends and Family! (despite my IWSG encouragement post, I had a rough day on Wednesday due to an "oops" moment with my thyroid medication but the continual encouragement made my day!)

Oh . . . and a fun cover reveal from Tara Tyler for her new, MG Fantasy, Broken Branch Falls!
Gabe is an average fifteen-year-old goblin. He’s in the marching band, breezes through calculus, and gets picked on daily by the other kids at school, especially the ogres. Gabe’s closest friends are goblins like him, but Gabe is tired of being a goblin – he’d like to try other things. And he has his eye on the new ogress at school. It’s against all beastly rules, but there’s just something about her.
When a prank goes wrong, Gabe is forced to join the football team as punishment – but finds a way to make it work. Soon the whole school is getting in on the rule-breaking fad of mingling with other species. Too bad the adults have to step in and ruin things by threatening to destroy the school and split up Broken Branch Falls. And Gabe is their scapegoat. With help from friends, old and new, Gabe sets out on a quest for a relic of their mysterious past, which hopefully holds the key to saving Broken Branch Falls. After all that trouble, it better work.

An Interview with Miss Jack and Celebrate the Small Things

I'm excited to be interviewing the one and only, However Improbable, Miss Jack Lewis Baillot:

Miss Jack Lewis Baillot is the author of the Steampunk adventure book, Haphazardly Implausible as well as the other three in this series. She has also written many other books which she hopes to publish someday.

She's also a fellow Sherlock and Psych fan, as well as a well-read fantasy reader, and usually has awesome quotes in every post at her blog. (Oh, and once in a comment section she gave a nod to my crazy idea that Psych is a very Americanized type of Sherlock (Shawn=Sherlock, Gus=Watson, Lassiter=Donovan or Lestrade, Julia=romantic Lestrade?) Anyway, on with the real interview:
Tyrean: What part of writing do you love the best - the daydream/prewrite stage, the first draft, the revision, the final publishing stage?
Jack: All of it. I have ups and downs with the editing but even it has enjoyable aspects to it.
I guess though, out of the all, I like writing the first draft the best. Sitting about, thinking up the new plot, and then writing it down in a mad dash. First drafts are wild and reckless and anything can happen in them – and some of those things cause me to cringe later – but it is still fun.

Tyrean: How much has the original Jack Lewis inspired your writing?

Jack: Considering the fact I didn't even know of him until the new The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe movie came out...a lot.
He has inspired me not only by his writing but his life. For one, he would answer every letter he got from his readers. He understood children and the need for them to use their imaginations. And he kept writing even when one of his closest friends told him his books were going to flop. He is an Author I greatly admire.

Tyrean: Do you have a favorite book by him?

Jack: Well...the only thing I've ever read by him is the Narnia series. I would read his space series but I cannot find the first one anywhere. So...the Narnia series. And out of that series I think...well, it is a tie between The Silver Chair and The Horse and His Boy. Those are wonderful stories and I adore Puddleglum.(Me too)

Tyrean: What's your favorite quote from C.S. Lewis?

Jack: Friendship is born from that moment when you say, “What? You too? I thought I was the only one.” (And I've found this to be a very true quote.)

Tyrean: What's your favorite part of Haphazardly Implausible?

Jack: The characters, though I have also become very fond of the airship.
I've written many books, but these characters have become some of my favourites. They surprised me every chance they got, they pulled me along on some wild adventure I never dreamed I would go on, and they showed me that by the end of the series I didn't know them as well as an Author should know her characters. (In fact, very often they would do exactly what I would tell them NOT to do, just to keep me guessing.)

Tyrean:  And do you have a favorite quote from your book?

Jack: As odd as this sounds, aye, I do. This quote wasn't planned, it just kind of happened, and I think it captures one of the characters, Darcy, very well.
I guess you're going to stay with us for awhile. Something about my stupid brother promising to keep you alive. Personally, I would have just fed you to the dogs.”

Tyrean: What's your next book planned?
Jack: A Stretch of Loyalty, because things got a little behind with book two.
The Loyalty book is one I wrote during NaNo a couple of years ago and was written before I discovered Steampunk so it will have none of those elements in it. It is more of a fantasy book, filled with somewhat evil princes, an elf with a sense of humor, grumpy dwarves, a one handed hermit, and a lot of running. And snow...

Thank you Jack, for visiting with me, and sharing some of your favorite quotes, and your writing! Check out Miss Jack at her blog However Improbable and learn more about her book Haphazardly Implausible while there.

Celebrate the Small Things is an awesome exercise in positivity from Viklit. We're encouraged to celebrate anything, whether it's getting the laundry done, or getting a sentence on the page.

1. I had only one day of feeling miserably (pickaxe pain in the head and throat) sick. I made myself rest. (Actually my kids said I stumbled around barely speaking and grading their math homework before falling back into bed) And thanks to that rest, I started getting better (no more pickaxe pain, just sniffly, achy, manageable stuff).

2. Somehow I made my best onion beef soup ever while sick. My kids said I leaned against the stove and stirred for 40 minutes and they weren't sure I was awake. Maybe that's the trick to good cooking . . . dozing half-asleep while stirring.

3. Homeschool lessons actually got done this week, and a creativity issue in writing was resolved. (It was a formal, reality based, descriptive writing assignment that took an unexpected creative twist. I finally said, fine, take that starter paragraph and write a full story. And I want it on my desk in 5-7 days - yes, I'm a tough mommy sometimes)

4. Before I felt seriously sick, I got the courage up to do three things: I asked the local library if they would stock my book, I asked my homeschool co-op if I could do a book signing there, and I asked a local bookstore if they would stock my book. They all said . . .wait for it . . .as I did, with my blood pounding in my ears feeling slightly light-headed . . .yes! The librarian and the independent bookstore owner then proceeded to give me a huge amount of advice and information that I'm still taking in, and feeling a bit foolish for not knowing already (although they were totally nice about it and very positive - it's me feeling like I should have known all that already).

5. I got a tiny amount of outlining/creative brainstorming/craziness done for my second draft of Champion in Flight. (the first draft is filled with pen marks and notations)

6. Two loads of laundry got done, and some of the dishes are clean. (otherwise the house is seriously messy - because I've been sick, I think)

What are you celebrating this week? And do you know Jack? If you haven't, go meet her - she rocks! (Also, have you ever wondered about a deep, undercover connection between Sherlock Holmes and Psych?)
