365 Days of Blessings, Day 287 Super Blessed!
Today I just feel super blessed! Maybe it's because I've been keeping track of my blessings all day . . .but here are just a few.
1. Winnie the Pooh.
2. My hubby is feeling better, although still feverish, he is maintaining a 100 degree farenheit temp instead of 102.
3. How many people does it take to replace my hubby as a tech man at worship on a Sunday morning? Umm, at least 7, or at least that's how many I counted around the soundboard trying to figure out which wire hooked where, and all that. I am very thankful for all the amazing help, talent and thoughtfulness of the guys and gals who subbed for my hubby today at worship.
4. This awesome poem Pooh Friend at Rainy Day Poetry. Check it out.
5. In worship today, many people prayed for Japan. We keep praying, and I am thankful for prayer, and the comfort and peace found in prayer.
6. A friend and mentor of mine spoke today at worship. She has such a loving heart, and loving wisdom. She is a "small town girl" who took her relational ministry to South Africa, following a clear call from the Lord.
7. Reflections on the Death of a Friend a poem by CD Sinex at Every Day Poets that moved me.
8. Remembering Hamlet's "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio . . ." from a high school drama day.
Book Blessing:
9. Hamlet
Writing Blessing:
10. Screenwriting Tips for Novelists is a great post at Writing at High Altitude.
Scripture Blessings:
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’"
Matthew 25:37-40

365 Days of Blessings, Day 190
Giving Thanks and Praise for these simple blessings today:
1. The amazing talent of my writing class.
2. One of my writing students taking a chance on publishing. He sent out his story to a prospective on-line magazine publisher just last week. I'm gladdened by his confidence and praying that his story is accepted. He is a ten year old boy who hated writing until he started taking my class. He is now writing between 2-5 pages a week, and looks forward to hearing feedback!!! I don't know if I will ever forget my favorite description in his first story. "Lime green lamborghini" is a memorable phrase.
3. My writing class has been asked to write "Dear Santa" letters for the co-op newsletter.
4. Two of my Shakespeare students are so intrigued by Macbeth that they asked me permission to read ahead . . . maybe even the whole play this week. Wow!
5. Shakespeare uses plenty of Biblical imagery in Macbeth, and it is fun to study.
6. There are students interested in taking my Writers Workshop and my C.S. Lewis classes next year at co-op.
7. My youngest daughter may be sick, but she has an active imagination.
8. My youngest has already written the sequel to Rick Riordan's The Lost Hero in her head. She knows exactly what she wants to have happen. Too bad we won't find out for six more months. I know these aren't Christian books, but we are all reading them simultaneously and then discussing them. (arguing over whose turn it is to read is a normal activity in our household)
9. Books that capture our imaginations and help us soar creatively.
10. God Came Near by Max Lucado. Gripping, descriptive, loving and thought-provoking book that lifts me up when I read it.
11. God came near, really, literally, as a baby in a manger who grew into a man who saved us from our sins.
Scripture Blessings:
"In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn." Luke 2:1-7
From God Came Near
"Majesty in the midst of the mundane. Holiness in the filth of sheep manure and sweat. Divinity entering the world through the womb of a teenager and in the presence of a carpenter.
This baby has overlooked the universe. These rags keeping him warm were the robes of eternity. His golden throne room has been abandoned in favor of a dirty sheep pen. And worshiping angels had been replaced with kind but bewildered shepherds.
Meanwhile, the city hums. The merchants are unaware that God has visited their planet. The innkeeper would never believe that he had just sent God into the cold. And the people would scoff at anyone who told them the Messiah lay in the arms of a teenager on the outskirts of their village. They were all too busy to consider the possibility.
Those who missed his Majesty's arrival that night missed it not because of evil acts or malice; no, they missed it because they simply weren't looking.
Little has changed in two thousand years, has it?"by Max Lucado, in God Came Near

7. Having a list of materials to gather, and planning to get them ready before next Monday morning.
8. The faith of a woman who recently underwent surgery. Wow!

20. God's gift of hope.
Scripture Blessings:"Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long." Psalm 25:5

365 Days of Blessings, Days 155 and 156
1. Funday Sunday at Peninsula Lutheran Church.
2. Parachute Games with awesome leaders, laughter, and shrieks of excitement.
3. All the amazing help that my husband gives me when "I" set up stuff for Funday Sunday.
4. Mega balloons for the balloon room.
5. Trick-or-treating in Gig Harbor . . . lots of cool costumes on kids and adults.
6. Trick-or-treating in a neighborhood . . . this is the way I remember it.
7. Walking the full walk to THE Candyman's house! Really, a retired candyman, handing out giant sticks of factory made candy to kids in his neighborhood.
8. Trick-or-treating with friends.
9. Pastor Paul's bonfire in his driveway on Halloween, and the Minute to Win It games he plays with his neighborhood kids.
10. Monty's pumpkins. I wish I had taken my camera. There were at least 25 major pieces of artwork there.
11. Knowing that even though I didn't get my Velmster costume all the way together this year, and spilled dish soap on the part I had before we went out, I am that much closer to having it all together for next year.
12. Hearing my kids get compliments on their costumes over and over again. Very cool.
13. My daughters' friend is participating in NaNoWriMo, so now they are too!
14. 1,382 words written today for NaNoWriMo. I feel like they are all junk at the moment, but I am glad that I was able to get some writing in today on the busiest day of the week when I've been going since 6a.m. at full speed for everything else. I wrote for 45 minutes in a dance studio lobby, and probably missed out on five cool coversations.
15. The nickel and chocolate replacement program for corn syrup candies that takes place in our household.
16. Watching my daughters separate out candy for Daddy, candy for Grandparents, candy for friends, and candy for the church movie night . . . knowing that they can't eat a single item they received from trick or treating last night. They can't have corn syrup, but they will happily exchange all the corn syrup candies for chocolate or nickels.
17. I have big enough shoulders to cry on tonight . . . even though I wish they didn't have to get used.
18. The snuffing noise our beagle makes whenver food is set on the table. I'm not sure which is funnier - when he decides that he is interested and sits down to beg, or when he snuffs three times, twitches his face and then walks away.
19. A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare.
20. The Lord gives us help when we need it, and gives us the strength to help when others need it.
"Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say, Rejoice!" Philippians 4:4

365 Days of Blessings - Day 121
365 Days of Blessings, Day 121
1. The Lord is always there for me, or actually "here" for me. God is always my refuge.
2. At this very moment, at my house, a 20 minute drive from where I'm currently sitting, a gentleman from our church who happens to be a construction contractor is tearing apart the remnants of our upstairs bathroom, and preparing it to be attacked by the plumber tomorrow.
3. Even with a bit of extra company this morning, we managed to get to our homeschool cooperative ten minutes early . . . which gave me enough time to realize that I didn't have everything as together as I thought I did . . . and then fix it.
4. My Writing Class of 9-11 year olds. I'm not sure if I'm teaching them well, but they are writing really well. Plus, they are sweet, and fun, and full of stories.
5. Despite being somewhat painfully shy, all of my writing class students have been sharing their work out loud in class, and complimenting one another. Yes!!! We'll work on constructive criticism in second semester. For now, reading something we've written out loud, and giving positive feedback is our main focus . . . well, after writing, writing, and more writing.
6. My Shakespeare class has some wit.
7. Romeo, in the movie version we're watching, looks like Zach Ephron . . . never noticed it before today. However, the girls think that the actor playing Tybalt is cuter. :-) They are reminding me of what it means to be 13 and 14.
8. Knowing that my expectations of myself as a teacher are probably higher than my students' expectations. Somehow I think I'm going to leap tall buildings in a single bound, and lead them into writing with passion and zeal their whole lives long, or into becoming avid Shakespeare lovers . . . depending on which class I'm in at the time.
9. Random compliments make my day. Thank you once-met stranger, for stating that my sweater looks cozy.
10. Time to take a moment and reflect . . . without taking too many notes or writing out the next lesson plan just yet.
Scripture Blessings:
"When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. As the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.'" Matthew 9:36-38

One of my favorite versions of this verse occurred at a Nativity drama a few years ago, when the narrator stated that they brought Jesus "mirth" instead of "myrrh."
1. God gives us the ability to give.
2. The first day of Sunday School.
3. Fresh paint in the Sunday School basement.
4. A new student.
5. A new teacher . . . fresh perspective.
6. Reading a tough Bible story with a 4th and 5th grade class, and praying all the way through it. Judges 4:1-5:3.
7. Deborah, the prophetess and Judge. See, the Bible really does have some strong women in it!
8. Going to the Western Washington State Fair, or the Puyallup, as it is affectionately called here.
9. Smoothies and curly fries my kids and I can actually eat.
10. Watching my girls, and their friends dance on the education state at the Puyallup Fair. They are all so wonderful!
11. Riding the big, wooden roller coaster.
12. Friends, family, dance, livestock barns, good food . . . all good, and all together.
13. A helpful husband on a busy morning.
14. Two moms coming to tell me that their kids enjoyed my writing class, and getting a card from one of my students. I am thankful for their encouragement!
15. Writing class, the second week, we are all more relaxed and ready to write, and share our writing.
16. Stories that kids tell.
17. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet . . . the prologue, the sonnet form, the wonderful youthfulness of the parts, and the thought-provoking backdrop of the feud.
18. English, Shakespearean sonnets.
19. Getting my preparation work done, here between classes, at the co-operative.
20. Hearing that my kids are having a good day at lunch time. Only one more class to go and I get to be a facilitator in it!

365 Days of Blessings - Day 112
365 Days of Blessings, Day 112
1. The Lord gifts us with family and laughter. I love unwrapping those gifts!
2. My husband gifted me with a two day trip to Shakespeare-Land theme town aka Ashland, OR.
3. My daughters, although only recently introduced to Shakespeare, were excited to come on this trip.
4. My mom and dad decided to come too, and in fact came earlier.
5. We had a long car ride of conversation, home-school reading and discussion, some reading aloud, some music listening, and only three breaks . . . all in all, a good trip.
6. We arrived in time to have a quick dinner, change clothes, find parking and pick up our tickets at will call.
7. The excited atmoshpere of theatre goers in the square, preparing to go into three different theatres . . . ours being the outside venue.
8. The rain showers passed before the play started, we were slightly undercover from an overhang, and the only problem from the wetness occurred when an actor, in the midst of a happy jig, leaped onto a platform, slipped, fell, and recovered quickly. Even though his character was the focus of some of Shakespeare's slapstick humor, we all knew that fall wasn't planned. The audience groaned in sympathy, the other actor on stage paused in concern . . . and then the play went on.
9. The amazing, talent and skill of the actors who perform at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. If you want to see Shakespeare's plays done well, this is the place to come. Our favorite players of the night played the parts of Olivia, Viola, the Fool, Malvolio, Sebastian, and Mary. All of the actors were excellent, but as we reviewed the play's scenes in our hotel room, the actors that played those parts stood out in our minds.
10. Malvolio's first attempt at a smile made all of us laugh, and laugh, and laugh. I am so thankful for laughter. Some of Shakespeare's humor isn't my kind of humor, and some of it is . . . very much so.
11. My oldest daughter liked the play, and my youngest daughter only liked parts of it. I am just thankful that I get to introduce them to Shakespeare here at this festival like I was introduced at the age of 10 with Henry IV, part one. I didn't like all of that play at that age either, but Falstaff made me laugh, and the theatre itself is amazing.
Scripture Blessings:
Psalm 126:2
Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."

365 Days of Blessings - Day 111

Blessed Blog Award Friday!
There are so many blogs to choose from, and so many blessed writing posts. If you receive this award, please know that you are a blessing in my life. Your writing has inspired me.
This week this award goes to Grace from a grace story because her life and her posts inspire me to be a better mother, to place every aspect of my life in God's hands, and to have joy in all of life's moments. She also writes beautifully.
Thank you for being a blessing in my life, Grace!
365 Days of Blessings - Day 111
1. The Lord answers our prayers.
2. Resolution.
3. Feeling free of worry. Why worry, when God has everything in his hands?
4. The strength of my family. I see the way that God has blessed us with connectedness as we work together, play together, eat together, pray together, and snuggle together.
5. My youngest daughter, Trisha, saying "Thank you, Mom, for finding my ballet clothes, and making us dinner, and putting my hair in a bun."
6. My oldest daughter, Anna, who often stays calm in the midst of a scramble of dinner-making, clothes-finding, and hair up-doing. She brought me all the necessary hair bands and brushes so I could put hair in buns while dinner made it to the table.
7. Bags of books taken back to the library, and bags of books brought home.
8. Road trip today!!! I mean, educational field trip :-).
9. Ashland, OR and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
10. My daughters have found a way to wear their fanciest dresses with warm clothes underneath so they can "dress for the theatre" even though the Elizabethan theatre is outside, and we may be cold. I planned on wearing long johns, jeans, and several layers of shirts plus a sweatshirt or a ski jacket. They spent a half hour last night making sure that tights, leggings, long-sleeved shirts, scarves and gloves looked good with their dresses. Peals of laughter could be heard all over the house.
Scripture Blessings:
"and Jacob, the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ." Matthew 1:16
"after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.'" 1 Matthew 1:2o-21
I have often read the geneaology listings in the Bible with some boredom, but today in Matthew as I finished reading that list with Matthew 1:16, I realized that these lists are a way we can be sure that God cares about families and family life. In the context of the story of Jesus' birth, when God sent his only Son to live with a human family, I find these lists meaningful and comforting. God chose a family for his son. Family is a gift.

365 Days of Blessings - Day 110
365 Days of Blessings, Day 110
1. Jesus lives!
2. I finished reading the Old Testament today, and I enjoyed it.
3. I am still marveling at God's providence a few days ago. He sent cousins from Canada, who I've only met a handful of times, to my doorstep when I least expected it, and when I most needed an interruption. I literally had just asked God to guide me, and send me a sign regarding the timing of a phone call I needed to make. I was just reaching for the phone, and there was a knock at my door. Cousins from Canada, an unexpected blessing.
4. Having many reasons to study my Bible, pray, and place all my trust in God, I know that my relationship with the Lord is being strengthened throughout all the storm and trouble.
5. Planning a two day whirlwind Shakespeare trip - the tickets were a birthday present from my hubby, the timing feels off with everything else going on, and we might get rained on - but I'm looking forward to it anyway.
6. Rubbing my wet beagle with an old towel after a long, rainy and muddy walk. He has so much fun getting dry.
7. Finding a simile in the newspaper like this one. "It's something like building the foundation of a house with Jell-O. There are not very many concrete elements." This is the statement of a judge about a particular attorney's case.
8. Hearing my oldest daughter sing last night at church. She has become part of the MS and HS band that leads our Wednesday Night Family Night worship.
9. Wednesday Night Family Night started up again last night with MS and HS band practice, (children's choir starts next week) at 5p.m., Dinner from 5:30-6:30, Worship from 6:30-7pm., youth group, Sunday School meetings, and Bible study groups meeting from 7pm. to 8:30p.m.
10. See you at the Pole! is coming soon!!! We plan on not letting the kids in our schools have all the fun, and we hope to join in the prayers at our mailbox area next Wednesday at 7am.
Scripture Blessings:
"'See, I will send my messenger who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,' says the Lord Almighty." Malachi 3:1
