Happy IWSG Day!
Our Fearless Leader is Alex J. Cavanaugh!
Our optional question this month is about our favorite stories we've written...
My Favorite Things I’ve Written (So Far)
It’s always hard to choose a favorite piece of writing — usually, it’s the last book I’ve published. But looking back, here are a few that hold a special place in my heart:
-
Dark Blade Forged (2024) — My latest fantasy novel, and the first in the Dark Blade Trilogy. It’s a story about a cursed sword, justice, and the power of light against shadow.
-
“The Top Hat” (3rd Grade) — One of my earliest stories, and the first time I received real compliments on my writing in school.
-
Champion in the Darkness (2013) — My debut novel, and the start of the Champion Trilogy. Publishing this book taught me courage in stepping into the world as an author.
-
“Dragonfold” (2009) — My first published short story. Dragons have always inspired my imagination, and this story opened the door to being published.
-
“Seedling” — Another short story close to my heart, about growth, hope, and finding friendship in unexpected places.
-
To Speak (coming 2026) — A forthcoming poetry collection in a newly expanded edition.
New Podcast Mini-Series
I’ve just launched a new podcast mini-series about the writing life, blending travel, caregiving, and creativity. This week is all about “Cacti, Camels, and Writing.” I share about the last few days in Mongolia and what these experiences taught me about resilience, faith, and the creative journey. Each week, I'll also air two shorter episodes with writing prompts. If you get my newsletter, you'll hear a few stories about riding camels and sitting accidentally on cacti as a kid.
Here's a picture of me on a camel, along with the core mission team:
And the cactus part, well, it's a metaphor for some stuff (see below), and it came from finding this anonymous quote in my dad's calendar:

You've certainly published a rich variety of work that picking a fave would be difficult. The podcast sounds fun!
Love that quote about the cactus! Sending prayers your way for the caregiving and for your parents....
I've enjoyed many of your stories and look forward to more of your writing. Congratulations on the new podcast. My thoughts and prayers go out to you as you balance caregiving and creative pursuits.
You on a camel!
You've had a great career, Tyrean. The next book will be out when you are ready.
Wishing you the best while you care for your parents. They are fortunate to have a caring daughter.

Life certainly brings us challenges and plot twists. Thank you for being there for your parents; your commitment to writing is well supported by perseverance and commitment! Write on!
The picture of you on the camel is cool. I'm sorry that your parents need your caregiving help, but it's so important to give them the help they need. I did that for my mom for a number of years at the end of her life. You're a dedicated writer, and I know you'll figure out how to include writing in your schedule.
I'm sorry you have to devote so much time to caregiving but glad you have some help. I love the pic of you on a camel.
I love that your story from third grade is on your list of favorites! I still have the picture book I wrote/drew in second grade.
I like how you picked from throughout your writing life. I tend to find something to like about almost all of my writing. I guess that's why I wrote it.

Your podcast sounds really interesting! I like how you're incorporating all of your life there. I also thought it was so cool that you included your third grade story. My fourth grade teacher was the person who encouraged me to pursue this. Prayers as you adjust to caregiving. I'm glad that writing is bringing you peace.
Nick - Thanks!
Toi - Thank you!
Alex - :) I know, right. :) And, thank you!
C. Lee - Thank you
Beth - ah yes, plot twists. :)
Natalie - I hope so. And thank you!
Diane - it's getting more organized and a bit easier. And, thank you!
Sarah - Picture books from elementary school are awesome. :)
Arlee- Thanks. And, true. We wrote it because it called to us, right?
Jenni - Thank you!
I love that your 3rd grade story is listed! 💓
Oh, I love that quote about the cactus. The camels look interesting. Are they easy to ride?
You've got some solid writing experience to be proud of! Hope things work out with your parents.
H.R. - thank you!
Susan - I love it, too. And if you get on the camels right, then yes, they are easy to ride, but if you don't... well, they stand up front feet first, so you have to lean way back, and also potentially readjust after they are standing... and I felt far off the ground, but eventually got seated right.
Liza - Thank you! And I hope so, too.
