World Building Thought/Question: How quickly do you pace world building information within your plot? Do you spend paragraphs to pages describing the world and the people within it, or do you just drop hints along the way? Or do you fall somewhere in between those two methods?

As a reader, I'm a fan of hints of information with a few small paragraph chunks of world building within the action of the plot. So, as a writer, I've tried to do the same. Despite the clunkiness of this glossary, I don't download all this information on the reader in page-length descriptions. Just a little hint is given as my characters run about their business. :)

  1. I try and go for hints. Long blocks, like Tolkien writes, bore me to tears.

    1. I know how you feel, Alex. Despite loving The Hobbit, I struggled with Tolkien's LOTR series in the second and third books when the descriptions seem to flow for five pages at a time.

  2. I hate pages of description, drives me buggy. I will tolerate a couple of paragraphs of description but my preference is the organic reveal of the world. I know it's not always possible but I like to discover the world as the characters do. Congratulations on your novel!

  4. I'm a hint dropper, and try not to describe anything more than 3 sentences, tops, in one place. :) I figure readers are as impatient as I am when I read; any longer than that, I start skimming!

I like the place name "Rrysorria." :)

  5. I also drop hints. I'm not much of a fan of whole pages of explanation.

  6. I'm with Alex on this one. I do little tiny snippets here and there throughout chapters and acts. Tolkien-esque descriptions I just don't have the patience to write!

  7. Unfortunately, I'm in love with description. I can read it until the cows aren't only home, but are steaks. I have to write description on the long side, too, but that's only for me. I end up taking it out after I can "see" where my story takes place. Obviously, I'm in the minority here. Doesn't bother me, though. :-0
