World Building Question: How do you deal with a character that steals your heart?
Helena, a young (age 9) Shepherd apprentice, stole my heart in Champion in the Darkness. I didn't expect her to. I thought she would be a minor character that came and went in two chapters. But then, she kept coming forward in my imagination, so I gave her a little more and then a little more. She hasn't had any POV chapters, but . . . it's been a close call.
Minor spoiler alert: Helena is one of several characters that I'm considering giving a series of their own. In fact, with Helena, I even have a brief outline for three novella length stories: Healer's Challenge, Healer's Hope, and Healer's Purpose. (all titles subject to change, of course).
It's wonderful when a character grows and begins to have her own adventures that you just HAVE to write. I think it's a function of the imagination having its own ways and times. The best stories flow from the deep places--below the surface where we try to wield control.
ReplyDeleteLaurel - your comment is so beautiful - especially that last part - that I want to frame it. Thank you!
DeleteWhen a character steals your heart...take them home to meet the family. I think you should do a series. Helena would say, Yeah.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement, Teresa!!
DeleteIt's great when a character captures you like that.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's fun. :)
DeleteHelena sounds lovely! I've also had minor characters jump into the MC role. Sometimes the heart takes you down a road that leads to a certain person and you just have to expose them for the gem that they are!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Randi!
DeleteI think Teresa says it best: take them home to meet the family! It's so awesome that she stole your heart...and the possible titles are great too, I hope you give her her series ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the vote of encouragement, S.K.!
DeleteYou at least bring him back for the next book!
ReplyDeleteI really liked Mevine in my second book, which is why he's there again in the third.
I agree!! Mevine is a cool character!
DeleteVery nice list of H names.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lady Lilith!
ReplyDeleteFinally made it here, Tyrean!
ReplyDeleteI'm always amazed at the level of world-building that is required for fantasy/sci-fi.
And looking at your glossary/world building questions & thoughts, I'm wondering, how on earth do you come up with these fabulous-sounding words/names/places? Are they derived from existing names/places? Or do you simply throw a few letters of the alphabet together, and then maybe scramble them? Or some other ways?
Susan Gourley over at susangourley.blogspot.com has a wonderful world-building theme for the challenge. You should check it out.

Ooh, lots of H names. I approve. ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd I've definitely had characters steal my heart the way Helena did with you. Also like you, I've even planned spinoffs for some of them, so I say go with it! :)
